Maths Calculation Videos
These maths calculation videos show the different stages in calculation that are taught at Cecil Road Primary School. We hope you will find these useful in showing the stages that lead up to the standard methods that you may be more familiar with. We teach the previous steps to ensure that children have a thorough understanding of the number system.

Partitioning
Breaking down a number into its place value e.g. tens and units

Addition
1. Adding using a numberline
Children use the numberline to help them add two 2-
Video -
2. Children use partitioning to add tens and units separately before recombining to find the final answer.
Video -
3. Numbers are partitioned but this time set out in columns to add the units and then the tens.
Video -
4. Numbers are partitioned, set out in columns but this time the units column equals more than ten.
Video -
5. Full standard method for addition
Subtraction
1. Subtraction using a numberline
Children use a numberline to find the difference between two numbers. They jump from the lowest number to the highest, using milestone numbers along the way.
Video -
2. Numbers are partitioned, set out in columns and units are subtracted first.
Video -
3. Numbers are partitioned and set out in columns. Units are subtracted first, but where this is not possible is exchanged into the units column.
Video -
4. Full standard method for subtraction.
Multiplication
1. Children use practical resources to make arrays to show that multiplication is the same as repeated addition.
2. The Grid Method -

3. When children have a clear understanding of the grid method, they move onto the full standard method for multiplication.
Division
1. Children use practical resources to show that sharing is the same as division.
Video -
2. Children use a blank numberline to see that division is the same as repeated addition.
Video -
3. Children then move on to the “chunking” method.
